Exchange 2007 - Managing Accepted Domains

Purpose

Exchange mailbox may have multiple SMTP addresses. For outgoing messages Exchange server always uses the primary SMTP address. For example, John Doe has a mailbox with john.doe@companya.com primary SMTP address and john.doe@companyb.com secondary smtp address. John Doe can easily receive the message addressed both to john.doe@companya.com and john.doe@companyb.com, but he can not send the message as john.doe@companyb.com because this behaviour is by design in Exchange server.
ChooseFrom for Microsoft Exchange 2007/2010 application allows users to send a message with any of their own SMTP addresses as the From address.
The application is a custom transport agent.

Current version: 1.0.0.7
This version can work only on Exchange 2007 SP1 with Update Rollup 4 or a later update rollup installed.

Benefits

Installation

On your Exchange 2007/2010 Hub Transport Server or Edge server computer:
1. Select (or create) a user account that is a member of the local Administrators, Domain Admins and Domain Users security groups.
2. Log on as that user.
3. Create C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\ directory.
4. Download ChooseFrom2007-Demo.zip archive file to C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\ directory and extract all files.
5. Start a command prompt. If you are running Exchange 2007, navigate to C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\Ex2007\ directory.
If you are running Exchange 2010, navigate to C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\Ex2010\ directory.
6. From the command prompt run install.bat.

Testing

1. Make sure your mailbox has more than one SMTP address. Ask your Exchange admin to add the following additional SMTP address:
    john.doe@choosefromdemo.com
to your mailbox.
2. Open Outlook and create a new mail message. Click View->Options and fill "Have replies sent to:" field with
     [smtp:<john.doe@choosefromdemo.com>]      ChooseFrom testing picture 1

You can add the display name:
     John Doe [smtp:<john.doe@choosefromdemo.com>]
     Click Close button.
3. Send your message to any external Internet address you can operate.
4. Receive the message you have just sent using any SMTP/POP3 e-mail client (for example, Outlook Express).

5. Make sure the sender address (the From: field) is john.doe@choosefromdemo.com

We have tested ChooseFrom on Exchange 2007 64 bit SP1 with Update Rollup 4 (a single server that plays Hub Transport, Client Access and Mailbox roles) on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition SP1.
The program also has been tested on Exchange 2010 64 bit Release Candidate on Windows Server 2008 Standard x64 Edition SP2.

Limitations

Version 1.0.0.7 of ChooseFrom for Exchange 2007/2010 application can work only on Exchange 2007 SP1 with Update Rollup 4 or a later update rollup installed.

By default users can send as their own SMTP addresses only.
However, it is possible to bypass this limitation by creating a security group named SENDASANYONE and placing there the user accounts you wish to be able to send as anyone.

Side Effects

The main side effect is that you can not exploit Outlook "Have replies sent to:" field as usual. If an outgoing message has the reply-to address filled out, ChooseFrom will set this address as the From: field and the Reply-to: field will be removed completely.

Client-side application that can cooperate with ChooseFrom

There exists an Outlook add-in utility named SmartReply 2007 that allows an Outlook user the ability to easily select the From address of the new, replied or forwarded message.

Uninstallation

1. Start a command prompt. If you are running Exchange 2007, navigate to C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\Ex2007\ directory.
If you are running Exchange 2010, navigate to C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\Ex2010\ directory.
2. From the command prompt run uninstall.bat
3. Delete C:\Program Files\ChooseFrom2007\ directory.

About this demo version.

ChooseFrom demo version adds "[ChooseFrom2007 DEMO]" to the Subject line of each message processed.
